Union Pacific Railroad has appointed Peter Decher president of subsidiary ShipCarsNow Inc.
Decher, who joined the Class I in 2005, succeeds Martin Coalson, who recently retired after a 37-year career with UP, according to a company press release.
Most recently, Decher served as the railroad's director of market and resource planning-automotive, where he led commercial resource strategies and Insight Network Logistics, another UP subsidiary. He was ShipCarsNow's director of operations from 2009 to 2012.
"Pete delivers an excellent customer experience through his deep understanding of Union Pacific's innovative franchise," said Jennifer Hamann, UP vice president and general manager-automotive. "In his new ShipCarsNow role, Pete will bring world-class transportation solutions to new and used auto shippers in the dynamic automotive market."
Meanwhile, UP announced that its North Platte Service Unit improved employee safety in 2015. The unit covers about 900 miles of track across Nebraska and parts of Wyoming, Colorado and Kansas.
The service unit's reportable employee injury rate improved 32 percent from 1.33 in 2014 to 0.91 in 2015, UP officials said in a press release.
A railroad's reportable injury rate is the total number of injuries reported to the Federal Railroad Administration per 200,000 employee hours, which is equivalent to 100 employees working a full year.
In addition to improving employee safety, North Platte also tied previous records in two other safety areas: railroad crossing incidents and customer safety.
