The new report summarizes the 2016 performance of Canada's railroad industry, from safety and fuel efficiency to infrastructure investment and productivity.
"The highlight of this report is that 2016 was the safest year on record for Canada's railways," said RAC Acting President Gerald Gauthier in a press release.
Among the report's highlights:
• The accident rate among Canada's freight railroads was a record-low 2.02 accidents per billion gross ton-miles;
• RAC's freight railway members originated a record-high 4.8 million carloads;
• Canada's freight railways reported record fuel efficiency;
• Canada's passenger railways moved a record-high 84.2 million people; and
• Railways invested CA$1.5 billion into their Canadian networks.
