Metrolink's board late last week approved a 25 percent fare cut on its San Bernardino Line in an effort to increase ridership.

One of the commuter railroad's busiest lines, the San Bernardino Line serves the San Gabriel Valley in California, with stops at Los Angeles Union Station, California State University in Los Angeles, Montclair, Rancho Cucamonga and downtown San Bernardino.

The discount is designed to encourage new riders to use Metrolink's services and reward loyal passengers, said Metrolink board member Hilda Solis in a press release.

The fare reduction, which will go into effect July 1, doesn't apply to weekend day passes. The program initially will be in place for six months.

The railroad initiated similar fare discounts on its Antelope Valley and 91/Perris Valley lines in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Metrolink Chief Executive Officer Art Leahy said those fare discounts resulted in increased ridership.
