New technology being installed across the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (Metro) system will enable Metrolink riders to use their mobile app to transfer to Metro's rail system.

New optic readers will continue to be installed and tested throughout next year.

"This will provide more flexibility and convenience for the 30 percent of our riders transfer to Metro Rail,” said Metrolink Chairman Andrew Kotyuk in a press release.

The $1.2 million integration of the readers is the the third phase of Metrolink's mobile app project. Over the past six months, the agency has undergone a technology transformation that includes the launch of a new website and GPS train tracker that allows riders to find their train in real time, Metrolink officials said.

Under the existing system, Metrolink riders who want to transfer to Metro Rail must use a TAP-enabled paper ticket rather than an electronic ticket. That means riders needed to stop at a station to buy a ticket from a vending machine prior to making a transfer.
