Fauth, Fortson join National Mediation Board

The National Mediation Board (NMB) has named two new board members: Gerald Fauth III and Kyle Fortson.

Fauth, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Nov. 2, will succeed Harry Hoglander as the board's chairman. Hoglander left the board Nov. 9.

Metra 2018 budget hikes fares, cuts trains

Metra, the commuter rail division of Chicago's Regional Transportation Authority, approved a 2018 budget that raises fares and cuts some trains in a bid to close a $45-million operating deficit.

The agency's board approved the budget Nov. 10. Published reports quoted agency officials warning of more fare hikes and services cuts if the state of Illinois doesn't kick in more funding.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Metro-North Railroad has announced the completion of improvements along the Port Jervis Line between Port Jervis and Harriman, which began on Sept. 11.

Metro-North crews made several upgrades to the Port Jervis Line and carried out structural repairs at the Moodna and Woodbury Viaducts, as well.

MBTA to fund PTC installation with TIFIA and RRIF loans

Two federal loans totaling $382 million will help the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) with its positive train control (PTC) project.

The two loans through the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) and Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing (RRIF) programs are designed to support infrastructure projects of national significance and the development of railroad infrastructure. MBTA says this marks the first-ever combined commitment under the two programs.

Oakland port gives first OK to CenterPoint logistics center

Port of Oakland's board last week gave initial approval to a landmark agreement with CenterPoint Properties to develop a $52 million logistics center on port property that once served as a U.S. Army base in Oakland, California.

The agreement calls for CenterPoint to construct and manage the 440,000-square-foot facility, which would be the first phase of a planned seaport logistics complex that could eventually encompass nearly 180 acres.

Amtrak has announced several track renewal projects in New York Penn Station as part of its Infrastructure Renewal program that rolled out in summer of 2017.

TriMet, ATU agree to three-year pact

The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 757 late last week reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract.

The pact covers terms for the period between December 2016 and November 2019. The agreement includes a 3 percent wage increase retroactive to December 2016 and an additional 3.25 percent increase in December 2017.

Secure Rail 2018 planners are seeking proposals from potential presenters for Progressive Railroading's fifth annual conference, which will be held April 25-26 in Orlando, Florida.Organizers are seeking presenters for their expertise and experience with the latest risks and threats to physical and cyber security. Topics may include how to anticipate future threats and how to safeguard people and organizations from threats.Secure Rail was created to bridge the gap between emerging technologies and rail security. Previous conference topics have addressed critical infrastructure, cyber security, emergency preparedness, hazmat transportation, intermodal security, new technology, positive train control and vulnerability assessments.The deadline to submit presentation proposals is Nov. 17.
