BNSF unveils $105 million capex plan for Montana

BNSF Railway Co. yesterday announced it will invest $105 million this year on capital expenditures in Montana.

Consisting mostly of planned maintenance, the plan calls for more than 840 miles of track surfacing and/or undercutting work, as well as the replacement of 55 miles of rail and close to 110,000 ties.

BNSF posts revenue, income growth in 2018

BNSF Railway Co. posted fourth-quarter operating income of $2.1 billion, up 3 percent over the same quarter's results in 2017.

A subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., BNSF logged quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion, up 10 percent, and a net income of $1.4 billion, up 30 percent, compared with 2017's results, according to a BNSF financial performance summary.

BNSF slates $175 million for capex projects in Washington

BNSF Railway Co. has budgeted $175 million in capital expenditures this year for infrastructure work in the state of Washington, the Class I announced late last week.Much of BNSF's 2019 capital plan in the state will focus on replacing and upgrading rail, ties and ballast, company officials said in a press release.Over the past five years, the Class I has spent about $1 billion to expand and maintain its network in Washington. This year, the maintenance program in the state includes 820 miles of track surfacing and/or undercutting work, as well as the replacement of 50 miles of rail and 130,000 ties.In addition to maintenance projects, the railroad plans to install 2 miles of new double-track along the Fallbridge Subdivision near Wishram."Whether it's moving agricultural products to West Coast ports for exports or lumber from the Pacific Northwest to support construction domestically, Washington is an integral part of the BNSF rail network," said Jon Gabriel, general manager of operations, Northwest Division. The Washington projects are part of BNSF's $3.57 billion capital expenditure program for this year.

BNSF outlines capex plans for California, New Mexico and Texas

BNSF Railway Co. yesterday unveiled its 2019 capital expenditure plans for California, New Mexico and Texas.

In Texas, the Class I will spend $405 million for expansion work that will include a new double track to be constructed between the Alliance Intermodal Facility in Fort Worth and Cleburne, as well as two new sidings in the Madill Subdivision north of Dallas.

BNSF budgets nearly $3.6 billion for capex in 2019

BNSF Railway Co. will spend $3.57 billion on capital expenditures this year, up from $3.4 billion in 2018, the Class I announced yesterday.

This year's plan will continue to emphasize maintenance and expansion of the network "with an unwavering focus on operating a safe railroad that meets customers' demands," BNSF officials said in a press release.

U.S. Coast Guard seeks input on BNSF's proposed bridges in Idaho

The U.S. Coast Guard has released a draft environmental assessment (EA) of BNSF Railway Co.'s proposed construction of railroad bridges across Lake Pend Oreille and Sand Creek at Sandpoint in Bonner County, Idaho.

BNSF proposes constructing a second mainline track and associated bridges parallel to existing rail bridges that cross the lake and creek. As structures over U.S. navigable waters, the proposed bridges will require a Coast Guard bridge permit.

BNSF customers invested $3 billion in industrial developments in 2018

BNSF Railway Co. announced yesterday that plant construction and upgrade investments made by its customers in 2018 totaled nearly $3 billion.

Last year marked the eighth consecutive year that BNSF customers and local economic development organizations have invested more than $1 billion in a calendar year for new or expanded facilities, according to a BNSF press release.

The program identifies optimal rail-served sites for customer development along the Class I's network. To be considered for the designation, sites must undergo a thorough analysis that includes an evaluation of environmental and geotechnical standards, available utilities and site availability.

BNSF cranks up volume, caps off capital plan as year draws to a close

BNSF Railway Co. is moving strong volumes throughout its network during the late portion of the peak season, according to a customer letter issued by the Class I Dec. 21.

Volume in the week ending Dec. 15 increased slightly over the prior week and represented a new year-to-date high at nearly 216,500 units, BNSF officials wrote in the letter. Year-to-date volume through that week totaling 10.3 million carloads and intermodal units exceeded the full-year volume in each of the past 11 years, they said.

Minnesota council OKs agreements for Willmar Wye rail project

The City Council of Willmar, Minnesota, this week unanimously approved master agreements for the Willmar Wye rail project.

The project is a public-private partnership between BNSF Railway Co., the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), Kandiyohi County and the city of Willmar to build a new rail line bypass on the city's west side.

BNSF posts higher revenue, expenses in Q3

BNSF Railway Co. reported third-quarter revenue rose 16 percent to $6.1 billion from $5.3 billion, while operating income increased 9 percent to $2.1 billion from $1.9 billion in the same quarter a year ago.The Class I's net income in the quarter surged 34 percent to $1.4 billion from $1 billion in Q3 2017, according to BNSF's Q3 performance summary.BNSF posted an operating ratio of 64.5 percent for the quarter, compared with 62.4 percent a year ago. Expenses during the quarter increased 20 percent to $4 billion from $3.4 billion in Q3 2017.Average revenue per car/unit rose 11 percent during the quarter as a result of business mix changes, higher fuel surcharges driven primarily by higher fuel prices and increased rates per car/unit.Also during Q3 2018 compared with last year:
• Consumer product volumes rose 1 percent due to higher intermodal volumes;
• Industrial products volume increased 13 percent primarily due to strength in the industrial and energy sectors;
• Agricultural products volume rose 16 percent due to strong export and domestic grain shipments, as well as higher fertilizer and other grain products; and
• Coal volume fell 5 percent, primarily due to plant retirements combined with competition from natural gas and renewables, partially offset by market share gains and improved export volumes.

BNSF Railway Co. yesterday issued its latest corporate responsibility and sustainability report, which highlights the railroad’s progress in 2017 on implementing sustainable practices, engaging employees and connecting with communities.

The Class I used Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Guidelines — a globally recognized reporting framework for environmental, social and governance performance — to relay its most vital sustainability-related issues, BNSF officials said in a press release. The Class I last year conducted a materiality assessment to help guide the development of the report, seeking feedback from numerous internal and external stakeholders on the most impactful areas associated with operating in a safe, responsible and sustainable manner.

Coast Guard seeks public input on BNSF bridge project in Seattle

The U.S. Coast Guard is soliciting public comments on BNSF Railway Co.'s plans to build a movable rail bridge across Salmon Bay west of the Ballard Locks in Seattle.

The proposed structure would replace an existing bascule bridge that spans the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The bridge is a critical link to BNSF's network to the north, south and east, according to the Class I’s "Inside Track" newsletter. Thirty to 40 trains cross the century-old bridge daily, including Sounder and Amtrak passenger trains.

BNSF awarded $22.3 million California grant to pilot clean technology

BNSF Railway Co. and the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District have been preliminarily awarded a $22.6 million grant from the California Air Resource Board to pilot emissions-reducing technologies in and around rail yards.

BNSF will collaborate with industry partners to test the feasibility of the technologies, company officials said in a press release.

Rose to retire from BNSF in 2019

Matthew Rose will step down as executive chairman and retire from BNSF Railway Co. in April 2019, the company announced today.

When he retires, Rose will have been executive chairman for six years and BNSF chief executive officer for the prior 13 years. He also served in senior leadership for marketing and operations before assuming the CEO role in 2000.

Contractor selected for Willmar Rail Connector project

The Hoffman Team has been selected as the design-build "best value proposer" for the road portion of the Willmar Rail Connector and Industrial Access Project, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announced this week.

Known as Willmar Wye, the project is a public-private partnership between BNSF Railway Co., MnDOT, Kandiyohi County and the city of Willmar to build a new rail line bypass on the city's west side.

BNSF opens logistics center in Oklahoma

BNSF Railway Co. yesterday unveiled its newest logistics center during an event held in Moore, Oklahoma, for customers, local officials and residents.

Located within the city limits of Oklahoma City and Moore, Logistics Center Oklahoma City is designed to accommodate manifest and unit trains, and store freight. The facility can handle up to four manifest and two unit trains at a time.
