WMATA to sell corporate naming rights for planned Silver Line station

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) board is planning to sell corporate naming rights later this month for the future Innovation Center Station on the Silver Line extension in Fairfax County, Virginia, according to a local news report.

A Fortune Global 500 company currently in negotiations to lease a headquarters location adjacent to the station has expressed interest in being the corporate sponsor of the station, according to documents prepared for the WMATA board and obtained by the WTOP-FM radio station.

Santa Clara VTA pauses pre-revenue service on Berryessa extension

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) last week announced it has suspended most of Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) pre-revenue operations on the 10-mile BART Silicon Valley Berryessa extension in California to create a “more practical” work plan.

Since June, VTA and BART have been working on starting passenger service on the extension before year's end. The work has involved efforts by both agencies to complete final systems modification testing, BART’s system acceptance testing and BART’s pre-revenue operations.

About 3,000 conductors, trainmen and yard workers employed by CN walked off the job early this morning, launching the first strike at the Class I in a decade."Conductors, trainpersons and yard workers at CN are now officially on strike!" Teamsters Canada announced today on Twitter, after both organizations failed to resolve contract issues.The Teamsters Canadian Rail Conference (TCRC), which represents the workers and is the largest union at CN, issued a 72-hour strike notice to the Class I on Nov. 16 after negotiations stalled.TCRC spokesman Christopher Monette said yesterday that the strike was issued because workers are "hitting a wall on issues related to health and safety," Reuters reported.Also yesterday, after a plea from shippers, Canada's Liberal government sent two ministers to meet with CN and union officials in an effort to avert the strike, according to Reuters.A CN spokesman did not respond to Progressive Railroading's request for a comment prior to deadline.

The decline in U.S. freight-rail traffic continued through October. At recent industry trade shows, railroaders and suppliers weren’t shy about acknowledging the sluggish and uncertain economy, noting that freight-rail capital expenditures were down for the most part this year, and could be down again in 2020.  But not all rail execs have been using the “D” word this fall.

Stadler signed a contract with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority to develop a hydrogen-powered FLIRT H2 vehicle for the authority’s Redlands Passenger Rail Project, a planned nine mile commuter-rail line between Redlands and San Bernardino, California. The vehicle will consist of two rail cars with a power pack in between them that holds fuel cells and hydrogen tanks. The train, which will be introduced on the planned route in 2024, will be the first hydrogen-powered passenger train to operate in the United States, Stadler officials said in a press release. Trinity Industries Inc. named Gregg Mitchell chief commercial officer of TrinityRail. Mitchell will be responsible for new customer service solutions and product development. He joined Trinity in 2007 and has led multiple businesses for the company, including the Trinity Logistics Group and Trinity Highway Products. Prior to Trinity, he served as an executive in supply chain for companies including Glazers Corp., Gap Inc., and Walmart Inc.Alstom signed a nearly $133 million contract to deliver 19 Coradia Continental electric regional trains to DB Regio AG in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.  Beginning in December 2022, the new trains will be gradually deployed on routes from Karlsruhe to Heilbronn, as well as from Freudenstadt to Herrenberg. The trains will be designed to cope with steep gradients on the route and include high-performance Wi-Fi and large capacity for bicycle storage, Alstom officials said in a press release. Meanwhile, Alstom also extended its contract with SBB, the Swiss national railway company, to maintain its European Train Control System (ETCS) equipment for another 10 years in a contract worth nearly $28 million. Alstom previously installed the ETCS equipment onboard around 500 SBB vehicles and provided maintenance support.Huber+Suhner Inc. has introduced an expanded railway antenna offering following its acquisition of the Kathrein Mobile Communication rail antenna portfolio in May. The merged portfolio now covers all possible radio frequency service applications for railway needs, company officials said in a press release.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) last week announced the launch of a program designed to increase small business participation in its large-scale construction projects by providing local entrepreneurs with financial guidance, support and resources to bid on city contracts. 

For some small businesses, working on a large construction project requires resources that many firms don’t have, including cash flow that can enable them to purchase materials ahead of being reimbursed, access to loans and other forms of credit, insurance for larger jobs, and access to IT and administrative supports, CTA officials said in a press release.

Georgia Ports Authority posts record container volume for October

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) logged 428,400 20-foot equivalent (TEU) container units in October, up 3.5 percent over October 2018 and a record for the month.

The strong month gave the Port of Savannah a fiscal year-to-date total of 1.6 million TEUs, up 90,600, or 6 percent, GPA officials said in a press release.

Pennsylvania OKs multimodal infrastructure projects for funding

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf last week announced the approval of 141 transportation infrastructure projects for a total of $79.3 million in funding through the Multimodal Transportation Fund (MTF).

Established in 2013, the MTF funds infrastructure improvement projects aimed at ensuring safe and reliable transportation access in communities across the state. Projects eligible for funding include rail, roads, walking and bike trails, traffic safety, public transportation and air transportation.

MTA issues final proposed 2020 budget, four-year financial plan

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) last week presented its final proposed 2020 budget and four-year financial plan, which includes $253 million in higher farebox revenue than projected in the July plan due to increased ridership across the system.

The proposed budget includes no budget-driven service cuts and advances the agency’s Transformation Plan aimed at dramatically improving service and delivering significant reforms for taxpayers and commuters, MTA officials said in a press release.

CN conductors, rail yard coordinators could strike as of Nov. 19

The Teamsters Canadian Rail Conference, which represents 3,200 CN employees who serve as train conductors and rail yard coordinators in Canada, notified CN that it intends to strike as of Nov. 19.The union issued a formal strike notice on Nov. 16. CN continues to negotiate "in good faith" to reach an agreement before the strike deadline, said Rob Reilly, CN executive vice president and chief operating officer, in a press release.CN offered binding arbitration to the union, which declined the offer, he said."If a settlement cannot be reached this weekend, we will once again encourage the union leadership to accept binding arbitration as an alternative to disrupting the Canadian economy," Reilly said. "We remain committed to constructive talks to reach an agreement without a work stoppage.”Meanwhile, CN is laying off 1,600 employees as freight volume declines amid trade tensions and a weakening North American economy, The Globe and Mail reported last week.The layoffs will affect managers, office employees and unionized rail workers across CN's U.S. and Canadian network, according to the report."The company is adjusting sources to demand," a CN spokesperson told the newspaper, without being specific about the number of layoffs.

On Nov. 16, 2009, Northstar launched service on a 40-mile line between downtown Minneapolis and Big Lake, Minnesota, on right of way owned by BNSF. Stations are located in Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley. Northstar Link buses serve rail riders traveling to and from St. Cloud.

The Orange County Transportation Authority’s board earlier this week adopted the 2019 Measure M2 Next 10 Delivery Plan, which sets project and program priorities for a 10-year period through 2026.

The plan aims to support a balanced transportation system in the Southern California county. The transportation improvements cited in the "Next 10" plan — from enhanced transit services to improved roads — were promised to voters as early as possible through the Measure M sales tax referendum now known as OC Go, authority officials said in a press release.
