ASLRRA: Short-line industry achieves fatality-free year

U.S. short lines operated a full year without experiencing a fatality, the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) announced yesterday.

The achievement is a milestone for the industry and its 603 short lines, which focus on making every day a safe one, said ASLRRA President Linda Bauer Darr.

South Carolina Ports logged record October volume

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has logged its strongest October on record, handling 184,804 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) for the month.

The volume represented a 10 percent increase from October 2016. The authority observed growth across several segments, with particular strength in export loaded containers, said SCPA President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Newsome in a press release.

Ironhorse's Santa Teresa Southern Railroad will be the rail operator and has a direct connection to UP, according to a company press release.Located on New Mexico's border with Mexico, the site is in one of the fastest growing industrial areas in the Southwest, Ironhorse officials said in a press release."As an industrial rail park developer and logistics company, we have seen how vertically integrating land solutions, rail offerings, transload capabilities and trucking solutions creates unparalleled value to our customers," said Ironhorse President Matt Cundiff.

Study: Proposed Texas-Oklahoma passenger-rail service is 'feasible'

A study of a proposed passenger-rail service between Oklahoma City and South Texas has determined the route would be feasible, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced yesterday.The designation allows for continued analysis of the proposal, TxDOT officials said in a press release.Establishing 220 mph passenger-rail between Dallas and San Antonio was deemed feasible, according to the study's most recent phase. The study also determined it would be feasible to provide passenger-rail service between San Antonio, Laredo and Monterrey, Mexico.In addition, the study examined the possibility of providing 125 mph service between San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley and improved Amtrak service between Dallas and Oklahoma City. The next step would be a project-level environmental study to determine actual routes and environmental impacts before construction could begin. "At this point a private developer could step forward to determine future possibilities," TxDOT officials said.The $7 million Texas-Oklahoma passenger-rail study is federally funded. The study covers an 850-mile corridor broken into three segments: Oklahoma City to Dallas-Fort Worth; Dallas-Fort Worth to San Antonio; and San Antonio to South Texas.

Canadian Pacific has awarded ENSCO Rail a contract to provide inspection systems for the railroad's new track evaluation car. The unit will be equipped with track measurement and imaging system technology to provide key indicators of track quality and safety, ENSCO officials said in a press release. Specifically, the onboard technology installed on the new CP car will include a track geometry system, rail profile measurement system, track component imaging system and other systems. Together, the systems are expected to provide the data needed to help improve track maintenance and reduce operating costs, ENSCO officials said.

Miller Ingenuity has entered an agreement to install its ZoneGuard electronic roadway worker protection system on the Maryland Transit Administration's light-rail lines. The system provides a "robust communication network" that's triggered when a track vehicle approaches an on-track worker or work crew, Miller Ingenuity officials said in a press release. In addition, the train detection and communication network architecture is designed to eliminate costly false alerts found on similar systems. ZoneGuard also can be outfitted with wearable devices that provide equipped workers with an alert of an impending train.

House transportation leaders want GAO oversight of INFRA grants

Leaders of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and its Highways and Transit Subcommittee are calling for further oversight of a federal competitive grant program after a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found a lack of transparency in projects chosen to receive grants.

The GAO report focused on the selection of projects under the Nationally Significant Freight and Highways Projects (NSFHP) competitive grant program, created under the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act in 2015.

EDA grant to fund Iowa industrial park's rail project

The U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded a $2.2 million grant to the city of Davenport, Iowa, to fund the construction of an interchange track and rail spur in the city's industrial park.The new infrastructure will serve a new manufacturing plant and other businesses locating in the park. The project is expected to spur $78.5 million in private investment and create 500 jobs."This project will ensure that the Davenport region remains economically competitive and will provide hundreds of jobs for local residents," said U.S. Commerce secretary Wilbur Ross in a press release.The project will support manufacturing and logistics industries, and builds on assets in the park, which include an EDA-funded transload facility, according to the EDA.

MBTA outlines $101 million in winter resiliency efforts

APTA: Tax bill fails to protect Highway Trust Fund

The House tax bill's failure to address long-term solvency of the Highway Trust Fund (HTF) is a "glaring omission" in efforts to reform the nation's tax code, American Public Transportation Association (APTA) officials told members of Congress last week.

In a letter to the House Ways and Means Committee, APTA Acting President and Chief Executive Officer Ricard White wrote that the proposed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (H.R. 1) neglects to include a long-term solution to the trust fund's solvency.

Kansas City Southern de Mexico will serve a new petroleum transload terminal that will begin operations in central Mexico on Jan. 1, 2018.A Savage Cos. subsidiary will operate the terminal and has plans to expand it later next year, Savage officials said in a press release.The terminal is located near the city of Queretaro. Initially, it will serve manifest rail volumes, transferring products directly from rail cars to trucks. Once permitting approvals are received, Savage plans to add tank storage and fixed facilities for high-speed unloading, product blending and truck loading.At full buildout, the facility will be capable of handling unit trains."We have a long and prosperous relationship with Savage in the U.S. and we are honored to extend our mutually beneficial endeavors to Mexico, where we believe this terminal will facilitate additional refined product exports from U.S. Gulf Coast refineries in support of Mexico energy reform," Kansas City Southern President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Ottensmeyer said in the press release.
