Rocky Mountaineer plans to launch a new two-day scenic passenger-rail service between Denver and Moab, Utah, in summer 2021. 

Rocky Mountaineer will launch the route with a preview season of 40 departures across 10 weeks from Aug. 15 to Oct. 23, 2021. 

The Ohio Rail Development Commission yesterday approved grants that provide the state's share of matching funds for four Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) grants awarded under its Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program.

"This federal grant program provided us the opportunity to leverage both private and state funding for railroads," said commission Executive Director Matthew Dietrich in a press release. "These rail infrastructure improvements will have positive impacts on Ohio's transportation network for decades."

U.S. freight railroads hauled 527,462 carloads and intermodal units during the week ending Nov. 14, up 5.2% compared with volumes moved during the same week in 2019, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.

As has been the case for the past several weeks, growth in intermodal volumes drove the overall increase in traffic. U.S. railroads logged 295,316 containers and trailers for the week, up 12.9% from the year-ago level.

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) yesterday announced the winners of its 2020 Safety Awards to recognize RAC members for their contributions to rail safety.

Issued annually, the awards are chosen from member submissions.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday released its proposed 2021 budget and four-year financial plan that calls for slashing rail service nearly in half, eliminating 3,300 rail positions, and pausing the agency’s capital plan in the absence of additional federal aid to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Without emergency aid, the MTA is proposing service reductions of 40% for the New York City subway and 50% for the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, for a combined annualized savings of nearly $1.3 billion, MTA officials said in a press release.

Sound Transit has selected Mobilitie to deploy 5G wireless network infrastructure to support the agency's 4-mile Northgate Link light-rail expansion in Seattle. With more than 250 antennas, the wireless network on the Northgate extension includes more than 150,000 feet of fiber and cabling that provides a strong and reliable connection and backbone that will also facilitate future technologies, Mobilitie officials said in a press release.

The Alstom-led consortium Groupe PMM participated in the Reseau express metropolitain (REM) project office’s unveiling of the first rail cars that will carry passengers on the REM in greater Montreal. REM is a planned 41-mile, 26 station automated metro network. The cars for the REM are based on Alstom’s Metropolis platform. To date, Alstom has delivered four of 212 rail cars to Montreal. Meanwhile, lle-de-France Mobilites and Transilien SNCF ordered 13 Citadis Dualis trains from Alstom for $83 million. Of the order, 11 trains are destined for line T4 in France and two trains for line T12. 

Sound Transit later this fall will begin construction at Puyallup Station in the state of Washington to improve pedestrian access and bicycle connections to the Sounder South commuter-rail line. 

Station improvements will include sidewalk and bicycle enhancements, and construction of a parking garage and surface parking lot. 

Amtrak, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), New Jersey Transit and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) have joined forces to encourage universal mask compliance on public transit, MTA announced yesterday.

Through the "Mask Force" program, the railroads and transit systems will provide millions of free masks to riders across the northeast to slow the spread of coronavirus. The partnership builds on regional transit operators’ individual efforts to keep riders and employees safe throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

CN yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the date the Canadian government put the railroad's shares up for sale to investors.

At CA$2.25 billion, the sale was the largest initial public offering in Canadian history. And at the time, CN was the largest and oldest crown corporation in Canada.

The Miami-Dade County Commission and Brightline last week approved an access fee agreement that helps pave the way for a new commuter-rail system on the Brightline/Florida East Coast Railway Corridor.

The agreement calls for a $12 million annual access fee, in addition to an initial payment of $50 million. The 90-year agreement includes the annual fee payment only for the first 30 years, Brightline officials said in a press release.

Union Pacific Railroad today announced Humberto Vargas has been named vice president-Mexico, marketing and sales, effective Dec. 1. He will succeed Bernardo Ayala, who recently was appointed to a leadership position in locomotive distribution and network operations.

Vargas will lead UP's international business strategy in all commodity areas traveling across all six rail gateways to Mexico, UP officials said in a press release. He will work with customers, other railroads, suppliers and multiple government agencies.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) awarded the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) $15.9 million through the Federal-State Partnership for the State of Good Repair Grant program to improve signals on the Amtrak-owned Harrisburg Line, also known as the Keystone Line.

SEPTA was awarded the grant in partnership with Amtrak and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

All railroads subject to the federal positive train control (PTC) mandate are currently operating PTC systems in revenue service or in advanced field testing, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) announced today.

As of Sept. 30, PTC technology remains yet to be activated on about 223 required route miles, based on railroads' third-quarter 2020 PTC progress reports, which were due Oct. 31, FRA officials said in a press release.

Metrolink yesterday reintroduced its San Bernardino Line Express service between downtown Los Angeles and San Bernardino, California, which was previously suspended due to low ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Metrolink also adjusted schedules on the Ventura County, Antelope Valley, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange County and Inland Empire-Orange County lines to better align with rider needs, Metrolink officials said in a press release.

The Societe de transport de Montreal (STM) later this month will begin work to improve accessibility at Place-Saint-Henri Station in Montreal. 

The project entails construction of two new entrance buildings that will replace the station’s underground entrances. The project will continue until fall 2023.

The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) yesterday announced it has reached 30% completion of the preliminary design for the D2 Subway, a proposed second light-rail alignment through the Dallas Central Business District. 

Reaching that milestone means DART can begin preparing a final environmental impact statement (FEIS). Once submitted, the Federal Transit Administration plans to issue a FEIS and record of decision to environmentally clear the project so it can advance to engineering, DART officials said in a press release.

MTA Metro-North Railroad yesterday unveiled a real-time train capacity tracker on its TrainTime mobile application to show riders how many seats are available on a train approaching a station.

The app feature is designed to help riders practice social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The feature was previously unveiled at MTA Long Island Rail Road in June.

R. J. Corman Railroad Group LLC has hired Michael Donfris to serve as chief financial officer.

Donfris is a finance, strategy and accounting leader with 34 years of experience in leadership positions, R. J. Corman officials said in a press release.
