Florida Gov. Scott proposes record $10.8 billion transportation budget

Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday proposed a record $10.8 billion budget for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in fiscal years 2018-2019.

The budget would provide $171.6 million in seaport infrastructure improvements, including $23.5 million for the Port of Jacksonville's channel deepening and widening project.

Along with local and federal funding, the state's investment in the project would help continue the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' efforts to expand the waterway and strengthen Florida's position as a national cargo gateway, FDOT officials said in a press release.

The Port of Jacksonville is served by CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Florida East Coast Railway.

Scott's proposal also includes $568 million for public transit development grants.

"Transportation infrastructure plays an important role in helping support our booming economy, growing population and record numbers of visitors," Scott said. "By making historic investments in Florida's transportation system for the past five years, we have solidified Florida as a national leader and a global destination for trade."
