Jaxport sets new cargo records in 2019

Florida's Jacksonville Port Authority (Jaxport) announced yesterday it achieved record volumes in containers, vehicles and overall tonnage moved during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, authority officials announced yesterday.

Jaxport moved more than 1.3 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 5 percent increase over TEUs moved in the prior fiscal year, which also was a record for container volumes at the port.

Jaxport has set container volumes for four consecutive years, authority officials said in a press release.

Also last year, the port moved the most automotive vehicles in its history — nearly 696,500 total units. Strong auto sales in the Southeast U.S., combined with growing global demand for previously owned vehicles, contributed to the growth, Jaxport officials said.

Moreover, growth in general cargo volumes fueled another record: 10.9 million tons of total cargo moved through Jaxport last year, up 4 percent over 2018.

Jaxport is served by three major railroads: CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Florida East Coast Railway.
