Metra to install, test new signal system for PTC

Metra next week will install and test a new signal and switching system north of the Museum Campus/11th Street Station in Chicago.

The railroad is switching from a manual system to an automated one as part of its positive train control (PTC) implementation, Metra officials said in a press release.

To allow workers to perform the needed switch work, Metra will implement a construction schedule that could delay Metra Electric and South Shore trains up to 10 minutes. The schedule will go into effect April 26 and continue through April 29, with normal service slated to resume during the April 30 morning rush hour.

The schedule adjustment will enable Metra crews "to complete the changeover at this location and thoroughly test the signal system by rush hour on Monday morning," said Metra Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Jim Derwinski.
