Metrolinx has issued a request for qualifications for an operator to work with the agency as it finalizes arrangements for its GO Regional Express Rail (RER) plan.

As part of the plan, Metrolinx aims to increase the number of trains it runs each week from 1,500 to 6,000. The agency seeks a company with experience operating and maintaining service to passengers during a major construction and expansion program.

Once in place, the operator will identify ways to reduce commute times and ensure that Metrolinx is building the necessary critical infrastructure for the GO RER plan, agency officials said in a press release.

Although the chosen firm eventually will take over rail operations, Metrolinx's existing operations and maintenance contract with Bombardier Transportation will remain in place until the end of 2023.

"As part of our service delivery, we have successfully contracted out rail service since 1967 and our contract for that service is currently with Bombardier," Metrolinx officials said. "At the same time, we now require new specific skills, knowledge and experience as we move towards the implementation of our transformative GO Regional Express Rail plan."
