Norfolk Southern Railway has begun recovery efforts to restore service to areas affected by Hurricane Nate, which made U.S. landfall over the weekend in southeast Louisiana and near Biloxi, Mississippi.

The Class I announced yesterday that operations to and in New Orleans have been restored to service, and NS will meter traffic back into the area.

In addition, NS is assessing track conditions to and in Mobile, Alabama. Regional flooding and power outages continue to affect the area. Embargoes to New Orleans and Mobile will remain in place as the railroad works through traffic being held across the network to those locations, NS officials said in a customer service advisory.

"Norfolk Southern will be working with customers in the impacted regions to identify switching needs and service plans as recovery progresses," the advisory stated. "Customers should continue to expect delays for traffic moving through and to all areas that have been impacted by the storm."

Nate made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, but was downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved inland, CNN reported.
