STB: Class I workforce shrinks across the board in October

Class Is employed 151,900 workers in the United States as of mid-October, down 8.28 percent year-over-year and 0.38 percent compared with mid-September employment numbers, according to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB).

All reported employment categories reflected workforce decreases in mid-October compared with mid-September. Executives, officials and staff assistants fell 0.60 percent to 9,090 employees; professional and administrative, down 0.43 percent to 13,287; maintenance of way and structures, down 0.69 percent to 35,632; maintenance of equipment and stores, down 0.40 percent to 28,172; transportation (other than train and engine), down 0.80 percent to 5,955; and transportation (train and engine), down 0.11 percent to 59,764.

All reported categories reflected decreases on a year-over-year basis, as well. Executives, officials and staff assistants declined 5.96 percent; professional and administrative, down 7.29 percent; maintenance of way and structures, down 6.04 percent; maintenance of equipment and stores, down 8.30 percent; transportation (other than train and engine), down 11.13 percent; and transportation (train and engine), down 9.81 percent.
