Transport Canada takes on rail worker fatigue initiative

Transport Canada officials will address fatigue management in the rail industry, Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced this week.

A notice of intent will be published in the Canada Gazette for the first part of a proposed approach to incorporate up-to-date fatigue science in current requirements, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

Fatigue is common in the 24/7 rail transportation industry, where employees are subject to shiftwork, disruptive schedules and long hours, they said.

Canadians, rail workers and anyone with a vested interested in rail safety are asked to comment on the proposal after the notice of intent is published.

The initiative is part of Transport Canada's continued work to address rail fatigue, as well as Garneau's response to recommendations contained in "An Update on Rail Safety," a June 2016 report by the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities.

"My department is continuously working with stakeholders to make our railway system safer for all Canadians," said Garneau. "That is why we propose to move forward with changes based on the latest scientific evidence in order to best protect railway operators, travelers and those living close to rail tracks."
