NS posts 10 percent profit increase, record operating ratio

Norfolk Southern Corp. reported third-quarter net income rose 10 percent to $506 million, or $1.75 per share, from $460 million, or $1.55 a share, in the same period a year ago.

NS' bottom-line growth was driven by an 11 percent increase in railway operations income, yielding a record quarterly operating ratio of 65.9 percent compared with 67.5 percent a year ago, company officials said in a press release.

CSX announces executive team shake-up

CSX Corp. announced today that three of its top executives — Cindy Sanborn, Fredrik Eliasson and Ellen Fitzsimmons — will leave the company effective Nov. 15.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sanborn and Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Eliasson will resign. Fitzsimmons — who serves as executive vice president of law and public affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary — will retire, according to a CSX press release.

Ontario is establishing a High-Speed Rail (HSR) Planning Advisory Board to provide strategic support and community engagement as province pursues plans to build a high-speed connection between Toronto and Windsor.

According to the province, the landmark project would be Canada's first HSR service and would slash people's travel times, providing a faster, greener travel option that creates new opportunities for workers, businesses and anyone traveling in this part of the province.

Two of the three teams shortlisted for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line Extension (GLX) Project have said they can product the project at or under the $1.319-billion Affordability Limit.

The design-build teams issued the certifications as part of the final Request for Proposals process and MBTA says it allows the project to continue into its next phase.

A consortium led by EllisDon Capital Inc. and STRABAG Inc. has been selected by Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx as the preferred proponent for the Highway 401 Rail Tunnel project.

In addition to leading Toronto Tunnel Partners (TTP), EllisDon Capital and STRABAG will serve as construction managers and financial advisors. TTP includes WSP Canada Inc., Dr. Sauer & Partners and Amec Foster Wheeler for design services. The Request for Qualifications for the project was issued in September 2016 and a Request for Proposals was issued in February 2017. IO and Metrolinx expect to reach financial close in late fall 2017, with construction to begin shortly after.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. until Nov. 13 on its draft strategic plan for fiscal years 2018 through 2022, the department announced late last week.The plan outlines U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao's priorities for achieving four strategic goals:
• improve safety by reducing transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries across the transportation system;
• invest in infrastructure to ensure mobility and accessibility, and to stimulate economic growth, productivity and competitiveness for workers and businesses;
• lead the development and deployment of innovative practices and technologies that improve transportation safety and performance; and
• serve the nation with reduced regulatory burden and greater efficiency, effectiveness and accountability.After revising the draft, the department anticipates the final plan will be submitted to Congress in February 2018, according to a USDOT press release.

Ohio commission OKs seven grade-crossing improvement projects

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently authorized construction of grade-crossing improvement projects in Ashland, Butler, Champaign, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Seneca and Wayne counties.

Railroads involved in the projects are the Northern Ohio & Western Railway (NOW), Norfolk Southern Railway, Ashland Railway (AR), Cleveland Commercial Railroad (CC), Indiana & Ohio Railway (IO) and CSX, according to a commission press release.

MTA, PATCO begin 'leaf-slime' removal from commuter-rail tracks

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has begun deploying work trains that spray water jets to clear tracks of slimy leaf debris, the agency announced yesterday.

Crews are operating the trains on MTA Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and Staten Island Railway.

Jacksonville port set cargo record in FY2017

The Jacksonville Port Authority's (JAXPORT) public sea terminals logged record growth in containers and overall tonnage during fiscal-year 2017, which ended Sept. 30.

JAXPORT moved more than 1 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 7 percent increase over FY2016, which also was a record year in container volumes for the port.  JAXPORT moved 9.3 million tons of cargo in FY2017, up 7 percent over the previous fiscal year.

The team is made up of EllisDon Civil and Strabag Inc. The project calls for building a second rail tunnel under Highways 401/409 to accommodate two tracks, allowing for more frequent GO Transit rail service.
