Metro Transit-St. Louis late last week held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Cortex MetroLink Station.

Situated between Grand Station and Central West End Station in St. Louis, the new facility will be the 38th station on Metro Transit's light-rail system, agency officials said in a press release.

MBTA to study future commuter-rail needs

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) today will issue a request for proposals (RFP) to study current and future commuter-rail needs as part of the agency's "commuter-rail vision."

The study will examine topics that include the type of fleet needed to optimize the existing network and deliver new service, system upgrades and locations for future stations.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Amtrak have released a "finding of no significant impact" for the Susquehanna River rail bridge project, the agencies and railroad announced yesterday.

The study's purpose was to determine the best way to provide continued rail connectivity along Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, according to an MDOT press release.

The funds will make it possible to finalize the proposed project's financing and meet the construction schedule established by the Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec (CDPQ), according to a press release issued by Trudeau's office.

The planned extension of Toronto Transit Commission's Yonge Subway north to the York Region received a CA$36-million (US$27.18 million) infusion from the government of Canada to advance planning preliminary engineering.

The proposed 7.4-km (4.6-mile) extension would provide a "missing link" in Toronto's rapid transit network by connecting Finch Station to Highway 7. The extension would include five stations and will take approximately 10 years to complete.

Amtrak should pay for Penn Station disruptions, Cuomo says

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said yesterday that Amtrak should pay for "mitigation expenses" related to a summer of altered commuter-rail schedules as the railroad makes emergency repairs to Penn Station in New York City.

Although the amount of mitigation expenses is not yet known, the cost should not be paid for by commuters or New York state taxpayers, Cuomo said in a prepared statement.

"Commuter rail is going to play a more important role than ever before in the years ahead as people seek to reduce their carbon footprint, look for more efficient travel options and strive for more life-work balance by putting the time spent commuting to good use in either relaxing or finishing up with office responsibilities," said Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. "The Fiscal and Management Control Board (FMCB) and MBTA management team hope to look at housing, real estate, and other factors that will have an impact on the demand for commuter rail."

Canada commits $US 960 million to Montreal REM

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau announced on June 15 that the federal government will contribute CA $1.28 billion (US $960 million) towards the CA $6.04 billion (US $4.56 billion) cost of constructing Montreal's Metropolitan Electric Network (REM).
