FTA approves $75 million grant for Tempe Streetcar project

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) yesterday announced a $75 million grant to Valley Metro for the Tempe Streetcar project in Arizona. 

FTA provided the grant for the $192.4 million project through the federal Capital Investment Grants Program, which provides funding for major transit infrastructure projects nationwide.

The project involves a proposed 3-mile line with 14 stations that will connect downtown Tempe, Arizona State University and the emerging employment corridor of Rio Salado Parkway. The line will also link riders to Valley Metro’s existing light-rail system serving Phoenix, Mesa and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. 

"The Tempe Streetcar will provide fast and efficient service, improving mobility and access to other transportation services for the thousands of riders who use this service every day," said FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams in a press release.
