LA Metro to solicit public input on Crenshaw light-rail extension

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) is holding four community meetings this month to gather input on five potential routes for the northern extension of the Crenshaw/LAX light-rail line.

The extension ultimately will provide a direct rail connection to the South Bay, Los Angeles International Airport area, South Los Angeles, Inglewood, Crenshaw Corridor, Mid-City, Central Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Hollywood communities. The alternative routes would either extend the Crenshaw Line north to the Purple Line subway and then through West Hollywood to the Red Line, or to the Red and Purple lines at Vermont Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard near LA's Koreatown neighborhood.

Construction will begin in 2041 and operation is scheduled for 2047, LA Metro officials said in a press release.

The agency is performing a technical analysis of the alignments, and will use the public comments from the meetings to help determine which alternatives will be studied during the environmental review process, which is scheduled to begin early next year.

The $2.24 billion Crenshaw northern extension project is funded by Measure M, a countywide sales tax measure approved by Los Angeles County voters in 2016.
