The MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) yesterday began construction on a two-way grade separated underpass at the Covert Avenue crossing in Long Island, New York.
MTA is rebuilding the crossing at Covert Avenue as an underpass with a sidewalk on the east side, according to an MTA press release.
The crossing reconstruction is expected to be completed in fall. It is one of seven such grade-crossing eliminations that are part of the LIRR Expansion Project, set for completion in 2022.
“Eliminating this railroad crossing and six others will make the area safer for everyone and improve convenience for commuters, drivers and pedestrians," said MTA Chief Development Officer Janno Lieber.
