The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) earlier this week announced that the Gloucester drawbridge replacement project will require full closure of the structure through summer 2021.

The project includes full replacement of the structurally deficient Gloucester drawbridge, which carries Rockport Line trains over the Annisquam River in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

While MBTA originally anticipated being able to operate service over the bridge during the project, the closure is now required to complete the work, MBTA officials said in a press release.

Unexpected issues have been found during the project, including with the northwest wall originally constructed in 1911, excavation issues with the east abutment that precluded partial demolition of the structure, and questions regarding the stability of the bridge span once partial demolition is complete, MBTA officials said.

Shuttle buses will replace weekday and commuter-rail service on the Newburyport/Rockport Line between Rockport, Gloucester and West Gloucester stations.
