PANYNJ logs cargo volume increase, PATH ridership decrease in Q3

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) moved 2,016,797 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the third quarter, a 2.5% increase from the same period last year.

In September, the port logged 720,969 TEUs, a 15.4% year over year increase.

During the quarter, the port recovered to 2019 levels and surpassed its all-time September volume record as factories and retailers around the world ramped up activity in preparation for the holiday season and amid concerns about future supply chain disruptions, PANYNJ officials said in a press release.

Meanwhile, Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corp. (PATH) reported an average weekday ridership of 54,483 riders in the third quarter, an 81% decline compared with Q3 2019. 

Average weekday ridership totaled 47,028 in July (down 84%), 54,124 in August (down 81%) and 62,651 in September (down 79%).

During the week of Oct. 19, PATH’s average weekday ridership fell 78 percent compared with the October 2019 weekday average, PANYNJ officials said.
