Describe your current job and responsibilities.
My current position is the head of automated rail for Siemens Mobility Inc., North America. My job is to manage both the project and technical execution of the solutions and products within the automated rail business such as positive train control (PTC), office solutions and automated train operation (ATO) technologies.

Describe your career path.
I come from a long line of military service, and I was proud to start my career as an air traffic control specialist for the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of my active duty tour I joined CSX Transportation. At CSX I held multiple positions, but made my transition to Siemens as a manager of dispatch systems. At Siemens I have managed both PTC systems and office solution systems, which has led me to my current position.

How did you get into the railroad industry?
I enjoyed my military experience and wanted to look for an opportunity within the civilian sector that would make for an easy transition. As I was an air traffic control specialist within the military, I felt it was a very easy transition to train dispatcher at CSX. Additionally, the team of railroaders I worked with at CSX demonstrated the same core values I experienced throughout my military career: honor, courage and commitment.

What advice would you give to a new railroader?
The railroad industry is built from a legacy of proven knowledge, experience, hard work and integrity of individuals, most of whom have been loyal to rail their whole lives. As a new member to the team, listen to those who have come before you, learn, and commit to ensuring continued excellence within our industry.

What is the biggest challenge the rail industry now faces or will face?
As the rail industry continues to grow and evolve with regards to technology and automation, we are beginning to notice a lot of new faces and skill sets joining the industry. One of the keys to future success and growth within the industry must be to keep and utilize the knowledge passed down from experienced railroaders to ensure we do not lose the foundation of what got us here.
