OneRail report makes case for rail’s role in safe transportation network

A new report from the OneRail Coalition highlights the decline in rail accidents during the past decade and calls for more people and goods to travel by rail to continue the positive safety trend.

The report, "Rail Safety in the United States," highlights a 31-percent decline in rail accidents during the past 10 years, which OneRail says makes rail transport significantly safer than other transit modes. The coalition notes that the positive safety trend occurred even as passenger rail traffic grew and freight rail traffic remained steady over the same time frame.

TSB points to broken rail as reason for 2014 CN derailment

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has found a broken rail, due to an undetected defect led to the October 2014 derailment of a Canadian National Railway (CN) freight train near Clair, SK, Canada.

The investigation determined that the train derailed when a sudden and catastrophic failure of one of the rails occurred under the train, due to the presence of an undetected defect. Poor rail surface conditions had masked the presence of this defect and reduced the effectiveness of visual inspections and ultrasonic inspections. Including this occurrence, the TSB has investigated seven occurrences in the past 10 years involving a rail break due to a pre-existing rail defect that was not detected by ultrasonic testing.

AAR President and CEO Calls On U.S. Surface Transportation Board To Halt All Major Rulemakings Until New Administration Installs Full Five-Member Board

NEW YORK – Nov. 17, 2016 – The head of the freight rail industry's main trade organization said today the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB) should defer a handful of widely panned regulatory proposals, most notably forced access, until the U.S. Senate confirms a full slate of board members appointed by President-elect Donald J. Trump. Such a pause is in line with Trump's call for a temporary moratorium on all new regulation and a full review of both proposed and existing rules, as well as the process in which rules are made.

The call for a freeze is also consistent with the same principles that led Henry Waxman and John Rockefeller, then-leaders of the House and Senate Commerce Committees, respectively, to call upon the Federal Communications Commission in 2008 to halt any complex and controversial items until the Obama Administration took office.

The portable lifting tables facilitate the movement of HVAC equipment, bogies, wheelsets, air tanks, batteries, transformers and other equipment.Railquip’s self-propelled lifting tables have a minimum design height of 18 inches (460 millimeters) and a lifting height of up to 87 inches (2,200 millimeters).
