Short Line Safety Institute names new research director

The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) has hired Kim Davies-Schrils as director of research and organizational development. She will begin her new duties on April 7.In the newly created role, Davies-Schrils will be responsible for designing, developing, overseeing and analyzing key programs, SLSI officials said in a press release.Davies-Schrils has a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology with a research specialization in safety culture, fatigue and worker well-being. Most recently, Davies-Schrils was an engineering psychologist in the human factors division at the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, where she led multiple research and evaluation projects aimed at improving safety in the railroad industry.“Kim brings exactly the expertise the Short Line Safety Institute was seeking to assist our team in delivering a systemic analysis of the impact of our work on the industry," said SLSI Tom Murta. "We have the added benefit of having worked closely with Kim during the development of the Safety Culture Assessment program. We have first-hand knowledge of her capabilities in leading projects focused on human factors, aimed at improving safety culture in the transportation industry."Davies-Schrils said her immediate priorities will be to conduct a systemic analysis of the impact of SLSI's safety assessment and other programs on railroads. New initiatives will be developed based on the results of that analysis.

CN slates capex projects for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia

CN last week announced capital expenditure plans of CA$45 million worth of projects in New Brunswick and CA$5 million in Nova Scotia this year.

In New Brunswick, CN's 2019 capex program includes installation of 8 miles of new rail and 20,000 ties, and rebuilds of road crossing surfaces and maintenance on bridges, culverts, signal systems and other track infrastructure, company officials said in a press release.

Canadian government names VIA Rail CEO, directors

Canada’s Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced four appointments to VIA Rail Canada Inc., including Cynthia Garneau as president and chief executive officer for a five-year term as of May 9. Garneau is a lawyer and has been president of Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Ltd. since 2016, according to a press release issued by the Canadian government. She joined Bell Helicopter in 2004 as a contracts and compliance manager and later held positions of increasing responsibility in supply chain management, public affairs and government relations, including a stint as director of integrated business planning and production engineering. Three directors were also appointed to a four-year term: Grant Christoff, Miranda Keating Erickson and Viola Timmons. Christoff is a lawyer and has been counsel for the First Nations Health Authority and Saulteau First Nations since 2015. Erickson has been vice president of Alberta Electric System Operator since 2010. Thomas has been president and vice chancellor of the University of Regina since 2008.

Norfolk Southern touts growth, operating results in 2018 annual report

Norfolk Southern Corp. posted strong growth and best-ever operating results for operating ratio and income from railway operations last week, the Class I reported late last week in releasing its 2018 annual report online.

For the year, the company achieved an all-time-best operating ratio of 65.4 percent, the third consecutive year of improvement; grew total railway operating revenue 9 percent year-over-year to $11.5 billion; and increased income from railway operations 12 percent to $4 billion, a record.

CTA wraps up Belmont Blue Gateway modernization project

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) officials and Mayor Rahm Emanuel marked the completion of the $17 million Belmont Blue Gateway project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony late last week. 

The Belmont Blue Gateway project is part of the $492 million Your New Blue (YNB) program to modernize and improve the O’Hare brand of the CTA's Blue Line.

Cuomo taps Foye as MTA chairman

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has named Patrick Foye chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). 

Foye was named MTA president in August 2017 and previously served on the board from 2010 to 2012. Prior to joining the MTA, Foye was executive director of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for six years.

Railroad Software has added bridge inspection software to its TrackAsset application, according to a company press release. The electronic capture of bridge inspections will enable users to visualize bridge details and perform annual inspection in real time.

Penn Machine, which manufacturers wheels and axles for transit and railroad applications, added two Honor Seiki vertical turning centers to the machining facility in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, according to a Penn Machine press release. The turning centers assist with turning wheels up to 44-inches in diameter, as well as with live tool drilling, threading and probing.

ACE to release mobile ticketing app

The Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) commuter-rail service in San Jose, California, will release a mobile ticketing application on April 1.The application, ACE Rail mTickets, will enable passengers to pay for tickets on their mobile phone instead of waiting in line. Once the application is downloaded on a iPhone or Android phone, users will be prompted to create a rider profile including name, email and payment information. Once completed, passengers may enter their location and destination station and activate their ticket before each ride.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will rename the Yawkey Station on the Framingham/Worcester commuter-rail line to Lansdowne Station, effective April 8.

Following the name change of a municipal road near the station, the MBTA selected Lansdowne as the station’s new name, MBTA officials said in a press release.

Cargo forecast: Slowing economy expected to moderate port traffic in 2019

A slowing domestic economy will result in a moderate uptick in container imports through 2019 following last year's record-high cargo growth, according to experts at the Port of Long Beach's 15th annual Pulse of Ports Peak Season Forecast held earlier this week.

About 500 people attended the event, which brought together speakers from all segments of the shipping and goods movement industry to discuss the cargo outlook for 2019, the latest economic trends and their impact on the San Pedro Bay port complex.

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services has partnered with 2M Alliance to begin serving the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia, port authority and DP World Prince Rupert Inc. announced yesterday.

ZIM service made its inaugural call at the port on March 27, when ZIM containers arrived on the Maersk Altair vessel. CN serves the port.

Pennsylvania rail authority receives funds for Lackawana Cut-Off project

The Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority (PNRRA) this week was awarded a $400,000 state grant for engineering services needed to continue track and structure construction for a passenger-rail restoration project. 

The Commonwealth Financing Authority awarded the Local Share Account grant to allow the Scranton-to-New York City Lackawanna Cut-Off passenger-rail restoration project's construction to continue, according to a PNRRA press release.

CN will spend CA$245 million in Quebec this year on capital projects designed to improve safety and service efficiency.The projects will include installation of more than 42 miles of new rail and 155,000 ties; the rebuilding of 34 road crossing surfaces; and maintenance work on culverts, signal systems and other track infrastructure, CN officials said in a press release.CN network in Quebec stretches over 2,000 miles and serves the Port of Montreal.“These major investments will strengthen rail transportation in Quebec as well as the role of greater Montreal as a hub for intermodal transportation in eastern Canada," said Jean-Claude Poissant, Parliamentary secretary to the federal minister of agriculture and Agri-Food. "In addition, the investments will help facilitate the transit of agricultural and food products between regions, while improving safety.”The Quebec projects are part of CN's 2019 record CA$3.9 billion in capital expenditures.

FTA to provide $4M in funding to fight human trafficking

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is making $4 million available to help fight human trafficking and other crimes on public transit, the agency announced today.

As part of the FTA's new Human Trafficking Awareness and Public Safety Initiative, the agency is issuing two "notices of funding opportunity" (NOFOs) for $2 million each to prevent human trafficking and other crimes from occurring on public transit, including rail.

TransLink earlier this week issued a call for ideas for rider amenities at SkyTrain rapid transit stations and bus exchanges in Vancouver, British Columbia.TransLink officials are interested in amenities that adapt innovative technologies, business models and partnerships to enhance the passenger experience, they said in a press release.Successful applicants will present the idea to a panel of judges and winners will be offered support to develop the idea, access to TransLink assets to test and demonstrate the idea, and the opportunity to pilot the idea on a larger scale in partnership with TransLink. The deadline for submissions is April 3

GO Transit to expand commuter-rail service in greater Toronto

GO Transit commuter-rail service will expand in the greater Toronto and Hamilton area on April 8, Ontario government officials announced earlier this week. 

Mid-day weekday service on the Stouffville Line will be extended to three stations in Markham, Ontario, and new weekday morning trip options will be available between the Bramalea GO station in Brampton, Ontario, and Union Station in Toronto, according to a government press release.
